1-5 October 2012, Dartington, UK
The focus of the fourth GPWG (the third to be held at Dartington Hall) was on fire feedbacks. The ten participants represented diverse areas of research: from analysis of modern fire records, through fire modeling, atmospheric chemistry, to palaeo-records of fire. The group defined a set of analyses that would help to quantify fire feedbacks to atmospheric composition and climate on three different timescales: recent decades (as represented by the satellite observations of burnt area), the last millennium (from isotopic constraints, fire-enabled vegetation model experiments and high-resolution charcoal records) and glacial-interglacial (as represented by CMIP5 experiments for the Last Glacial Maximum and Mid-Holocene, and charcoal records covering this interval). Results for these analyses will be examined at a follow-up workshop in 2013.
